Age-specific sleep guide
How much should an 8-month-old sleep, including naps?
The evidence-backed recommendation is 12-16 total hours per 24 hours for infants 4-12 months, including naps.
Night sleep plus naps
An 8-month-old who sleeps 11 hours at night and 2.5 hours during naps gets 13.5 total hours. The total matters more than whether every nap matches a sample chart.
Two naps or three?
Both patterns may appear during a transition. Some babies take two restorative naps; others still use a short third nap. The total sleep and the child's functioning provide useful context.
What the recommendation does not mean
It does not mean every baby must get the midpoint, sleep through the night, or follow the same distribution between night and day.
Remember the limits
Wake windows are flexible planning estimates. Total sleep recommendations, safe-sleep practices, feeding needs, medical guidance, and your child's individual behavior take priority.
